Artistic Director | Choreographer
Brian Gillespie is a choreographer, dance and theatre artist, and teacher native to Ireland and currently based in London. He is the artistic director of B-Hybrid Dance and produces contemporary dance inspired and crafted from the hybrid of influences, experiences, and interests that both he and his company members have collected and practised.
Graduating in 2012 with a first-class BaHons in Dance and Theatre Studies from the University of East London and Columbia College Chicago, Brian uses his studies in dance and theatre through his work as a freelance performer, choreographer, artistic director and teacher. He also has a keen interest in marketing and has supported/directed numerous projects in the arts with their marketing campaigns.
Brian has created commissioned works and performances with B-Hybrid Dance for festivals/organisations such as ADOBE, The O2 Arena, Resolution! 2013/14/15, Pavilion Dance South West, The Legacy List – London Means Business- The Mayors Annual Address, Dance Film Festival UK, FLAUNT (USA), East London Dance, Emerge, Collabo14 (Avant Garde Dance - London and Bournemouth), Barrowland Ballet, Cloud Dance Festival, ICON, Cloud Dance Sundays, Big Dance UK, Dance Woking and more.
He has also led an extensive performance career alongside his choreographic work. Performance credits include Sadler's Wells, London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Summer Rites Pride in the Park, Barrowland Ballet, Avant Garde Dance, SUNS, ALIAS LDN, Geste Records, Laugh Dance, Columbia College Chicago, among others.
Brian is also a regular mentor and skilled teacher who believes that teaching is a two-way process. Teaching credits include; Royal Academy of Dance, Pineapple Dance Studio, Studio 68 London, Visceral Dance Chicago, East London Dance, Folk Dance Remixed, etc. Brian teaches workshops for academies and dance schools nationally and internationally.
In 2014 Brian was selected to join the second cohort of East London Dance’s acclaimed future innovators programme ‘The Fi.ELD’ – a training programme for dance artists in project management and producing. Here he lead and assisted on projects including; a large-scale community dance project with Barrowland Ballet for Greenwich and Docklands International Festival, collaborative commissions with Pavilion Dance South West, one day choreographic challenges for The Mayor’s Annual Address, and many more. Brian also produced his own text-influenced dance platform entitled Between the Lines at Stratford Circus.
In February 2015 CreationBox London invited Brian to join their ‘InBox development Programme’. Here he was able to focus on the development of a concrete plan and future for his latest work Breaking Breath through mentorship, private sharings with a panel of industry professionals and a week residency culminating in an intimate sharing of his findings with invited guests.
